A
true sense of history and English heritage runs through Spring's
superb range of seafood products. The traditional cottage kiln
smoking techniques, as used in the Harris family's original home in
Sussex, England, has given the company an enviable reputation and
taste difference. Springs Smoked Seafoods has quickly become
established as the nation's leading supplier of high quality, fresh
smoked salmon and seafood. The company draws on three generations of
expertise and the brand with the Merman logo is now recognised as
the established market leader in Australia for clean, fresh,
quality, packaged smoked seafood. This independent Australian
company was established in 1990 and is headed by Master of the
smokehouse, Richard Harris.
From
its inception, Spring has taken the standard of freshness, quality,
packaging, labelling and hygiene to new levels in the Australian
seafood industry. The standards set on the length of chilled "used
by" dates are high and oppose the practice of defrosted product
being dated as freshly packed seafood.
The
purpose built smokehouse and processing facility at Mt Barker in the
Adelaide Hills is export registered and complies with strict AQIS
(Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service) standards, Reg Est
1717 FPA Status. An A rating has been maintained with full HACCP
food safety controls and rigorous daily cleaning procedures. AQIS
officers carry out regular detailed inspections of the premises and
records. A full program of product, contact surface and factory
environment testing by an independent laboratory ensures continued
monitoring to satisfy AQIS and independent HACCP auditors of
acceptable international microbiological levels.
During
2004-2005, Springs will produce 1400 tons of raw & smoked
fish for the Domestic and Export markets. More than 100 full-time
employment positions have been created in the local area with
further growth expected. Approximately two tonnes of smoked
and fresh seafood products are airfreighted around Australia
each day, and export sales continue to grow.
Springs
currently services over 700 Australian supermarkets each week
with a range of fresh retail packs of smoked seafood all with
at least 21 days "best before" date codes. Springs range can
be found in all major supermarket chains as well as hotels,
gourmet food outlets and restaurants. The Springs market share
continues to grow strongly as more consumers appreciate the
flavour, quality and health benefits that seafood offers. Salmon
is naturally rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which has been shown
to promote bone growth, lower the risks of heart attack and
reduce the risk of dementia.
Export
markets can now be expanded as the supply of raw materials increases
and flexibility of supply improves. The main export markets
are Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and the
U.A.E.
